Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Injuries

Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Injuries frequently occur from sporting injuries such as basketball or football. The joint may dislocate, with or without soft tissue damage. These soft tissue injuries are frequently missed by A & E Departments or by the General Practitioner. The patient is told they have a finger sprain and that it will come right. These joints become chronically stiff if left untreated and frequently present 3 months after the injury. Treatment involves the provision of serial casting to straighten the finger, followed by a nighttime orthosis to maintain the gains made and an exercise cast to improve finger flexion.
