Activity Adaptation

Activity adaptation is the process of evaluating and recommending interventions to modify daily activities and routines in home, workplace, craft, game, sport or other occupation to enable performance, prevent cumulative trauma injury or accomplish therapeutic goals.

Biometrics E Link

A computer-based standardised evaluation and therapy treatment tool that offers patients another dimension to treatment.

Innovative technology is used to exercise individual fingers, the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Surface EMG is used for biofeedback, muscle re-education and motor control. The advantage of Biometrics E Link is that treatment progress can be reported over time using statistical analysis.

Casting Motion to Mobilise Stiffness technique

The CMMS technique is a cost and time efficient method of treating the stiff hand. It promotes the release of joint tightness so that joint motion can be restored without the need for multiple treatment sessions.

Graded Motor Imagery

Graded Motor Imagery is used to treat pain and movement problems related to altered nervous systems by exercising the brain in measured and monitored steps, which increase in difficulty as the patient progresses.

Heat / Cold Therapy

Heat and cold treatments offer an efficient and cost effective method to relieve hand and wrist pain, and relieve stiff joints.

Joint Protection

For diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis and related syndromes, Hand Therapy Consulting is able to advise and perform hand therapy exercises to prevent instability, decrease in functional levels and the progression or development of deformities as a result of hand joint pain.

Kinesio Taping

Kinesio taping is a renowned method of facilitating natural healing while providing support and stability to hand muscles and joints without restricting the range of motion in the treatment of soft tissue injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and repetitive strain injury.

Muscle Strengthening

Innovative equipment and clinical expertise are used to implement effective hand therapy programs. Results are monitored and analysed over time to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment program and ensure that muscle strength is regained and functional capacity is restored.

Paraffin Wax Treatment

Paraffin is used as an effective treatment for arthritis and stiff joints to help decrease pain and loosen up the hand and finger joints.

Pain Management

We specialize in the evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic arm and hand pain, including Repetitive Strain Injuries, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Hypersensitivity, Fibromyalgia and Work Related Upper Limb Disorders. Treatment includes the use of a variety of therapeutic modalities and techniques as well as evidence-based pain management programs to relieve pain and restore functional use of the hand.

Pressure Garments

Hand Consult SA offers an in-house service where bespoke garments are designed, fitted, monitored and adjusted accordingly. The compression garments are made from stretch knit polyester fabrics in skin tone colours.

Splinting

We can provide custom-made splints to meet the requirements of the patient, whether it be to facilitate healing, increase range of motion, prevent or correct deformities or improve hand function.

Therapeutic Exercise

A wide range of therapeutic equipment and techniques are used, including the use of the Biometrics E Link, that focus on restoring and maintaining strength and endurance in the hand and upper limb.

Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound is well-known as an effective treatment in the management of soft tissue and sports hand injuries, and to minimise hand muscle pain and movement dysfunction.

Workstation Assessments & Ergonomic Advice

Individual ergonomic workstation assessments are conducted at the workplace and ergonomic principles are applied to prevent the onset of pain and secondary injuries to the upper limb.

Wound & Scar Management

During the healing process, we assist in the management of wound care, including the removal of sutures, dressing changes and treatment of scarring. Various techniques and modalities are applied that will assist with reducing scar hypersensitivity and improving the appearance of the scar.
